Deal includes Broken Bow Records, Stoney Creek Records, Wheelhouse Records, Red Bow Records, music publisher Magic Mustang Music and a roster of major country artists

NASHVILLE, TN – JANUARY 30, 2017 – The new BMG has announced that it has acquired Nashville-based independent powerhouse BBR Music Group (BBRMG), including its associated labels Broken Bow Records, Stoney Creek Records, Wheelhouse Records, Red Bow Records and its music publishing company Magic Mustang Music.

The agreement includes the rights to a number of major country artists including Jason Aldean, Trace Adkins, Dustin Lynch, Randy Houser, Thompson Square and many others.

BBR Music Group is BMG’s biggest single acquisition in the recordings business since its launch in 2008 as the first new international music company of the streaming age.

The deal gives BMG a significant position in the Nashville music business and promises a number of benefits to BBRMG and BMG-signed artists and songwriters. BBRMG clients will have a greatly enhanced international scope as they are plugged into BMG’s global platform and BMG recording artists will gain a significant new marketing resource.

Since its formation by entrepreneur Benny Brown in 1997, BBR Music Group (BBRMG) has become one of the most successful independent music companies in Nashville and the broader US music industry. BBRMG has scored seven multi-platinum or platinum albums, 19 multi-platinum or platinum singles and 32 number one airplay singles across eight different artists.

Jason Aldean alone has sold over 14 million albums including 18 Number One Country Singles and seven platinum or multi-platinum albums, including 2016’s They Don’t Know which hit Number One on the Billboard 200, US Top Independent Albums and Country Albums charts. Aldean remains the RIAA’s #1 digital selling male Country artist of all time.

BBRMG will continue to operate from its Nashville headquarters and its 48 staff will transfer to BMG. It will sit alongside BMG’s recording operations in Los Angeles, which has released US Number One albums by Janet Jackson (2015) and Blink-182’s Grammy-nominated California (2016), New York – home to a roster including pop sensation Andy Grammar and Number One Christian artist Danny Gokey and Portland, Oregon, where rock label Rise Records’s roster includes PVRIS and At The Drive-In.

BMG CEO Hartwig Masuch said, “BBR Music Group is a phenomenally successful operation whose philosophy and commitment to its artists fit perfectly with the new BMG. I have a huge respect for what Benny and his team have achieved. The combination of BBR Music Group and BMG gives artists and songwriters in Nashville and beyond a new route to the worldwide market. We will be the alternative so many artists are looking for.”

BBRMG founder Benny Brown and CFO Paul Brown will remain as consultants to the business following the deal, while all existing staff remain in their positions reporting directly
to Executive Vice President Jon Loba. Loba will report to BMG US President Repertoire & Marketing Zach Katz.

Benny Brown said: “Since 2001 I’ve been approached many times by various major labels wanting to purchase us. The most important thing to me has always been my artists, my employees and my songwriters. They have always been my family and after meeting with Hartwig and Zach, I knew that I’d found the right partners to ensure my family stayed together and to also continue the BBR Music Group legacy. We were one of the very first indie labels to ever break through in Country music. Because of that we created a different culture within our walls that’s pretty simple – happy people are productive people. That’s always been important to me and that’s also the way Hartwig and Zach run BMG. I knew they shared my vision and my passion and that’s what made this the right fit.”

Jon Loba said: “Benny has been approached countless times about selling, but it took a very special company comprised of very special people for Benny to make this move. We couldn’t be more excited about joining BMG. Its culture aligns so closely with the core values the BBR Music Group was built on. BMG respects our heritage, but this is also about the future. Being part of BMG family will afford our artists, songwriters and staff incredible new opportunities. Beginning today, for the first time we are plugged into a proven global platform committed to delivering for artists and songwriters. We can’t wait to get started.”

Zach Katz said: “I want to pay tribute to what Benny and his team have created. It is truly exemplary. Nashville and its culture are such an integral part of the music industry that it was always only a matter of time before we expanded our presence. Never did we imagine that we would be able to do so with such an extraordinary roster of artists and team members. I am confident that together BMG and BBR Music Group will offer an unbeatable combination for artists and songwriters.”

The acquisition of BBR Music Group marks the return to the Nashville record business of BMG after an eight year absence. The first incarnation of BMG acquired RCA Records, including its Nashville operation in 1986, enjoying success with artists including Clint Black, Brooks & Dunn, Kenny Chesney, Alan Jackson, Martina McBride, Carrie Underwood and numerous others. RCA became part of the Sony-BMG joint venture in 2004, before parent company Bertelsmann sold its stake in the joint venture in 2008 to launch the new BMG with an innovative artist-friendly business model which brings music publishing and recordings together under one roof.

The new BMG launched its successful Nashville-based music publishing operation in 2009. In his role overseeing Nashville operations, EVP Kos Weaver has developed a diverse roster that includes Alabama, Brett Beavers, busbee, Danny Gokey, Hillary Lindsey, Buddy Miller, and John Paul White.

Said Weaver, “The BBR Music Group folks are not only close neighbors of BMG here in Nashville, they share a similar approach in their philosophy and relationships with their artists. This is an amazing match, our potential together is enormous.”

BMG today expressed its sadness at events at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas last night (Sunday, October 1) in which at least 50 are reported dead and 400 injured.

The shooting occurred during a set by Jason Aldean signed to BMG label Broken Bow Records (BBR). Aldean, his band and crew and two BMG staff members who were attending the festival were all uninjured.

BMG CEO Hartwig Masuch said, “We are horrified by the events in Las Vegas overnight and relieved to report that all of our people have escaped uninjured. Too many others were not so fortunate. We send our condolences and best wishes to all of those affected by this dreadful act.”

Jon Loba, EVP BBR Music Group, said, “While our artists and staff are safe, our hearts are broken for those listeners in our extended family who just wanted to share a night of great music and the camaraderie that is the hallmark of country music.”

Masuch confirmed that a reception in London tonight to launch Country Music Week and featuring BMG artists would go ahead in spite of the shooting in Las Vegas.

“Faced with such horrific events, it is only human to consider cancelling,” said Masuch, “but everyone involved was unanimous in their determination to carry on. The spirit of music is the spirit of life and it will not be intimidated.”

Thompson Square’s star continues to rise as the couple’s latest single, “If I Didn’t Have You” soared to #1 yesterday on both the Billboard Hot Country Songs Chart and the Country Aircheck/ USA Today chart, powered by Mediabase.

The duo’s second #1 accomplishment is especially poignant for Keifer and Shawna because “If I Didn’t have You” was co-written by the duo about the love between Shawna’s mother and father, in the wake of her father’s passing from cancer last year. The #1 accolades also fell on a date very special to the duo:

“Writing your first number one is an amazing goal to reach. Writing your first number one song inspired by the loss of your Dad and having it go number one on his birthday is a gift straight from heaven,” says Shawna. “We want to thank all of our fans and country radio for making this possible.”

“If I Didn’t Have You” showcases the undeniable strength and versatility of both Keifer and Shawna Thompson’s voices. While the fiercely swelling instrumentation embodies life’s heartaches, Thompson Square’s vocals exude a powerful tenderness that clearly expresses their love for one another.

Co-written alongside Jason Sellers and Paul Jenkins, “If I Didn’t Have You” was penned by the same foursome that collaborated on Thompson Square’s award-winning hit single, “I Got You.” Watch the official music video here: http://youtu.be/UptgRHX4JsI

Thompson Square’s latest #1 single comes on the heels of the duo’s second consecutive ACM win for Vocal Duo of the Year earlier this month in Las Vegas and amid critical praise for it’s recently released sophomore album, Just Feels Good, which marked the highest album debut of the duo’s career.

Nashville, TN (Oct. 18th) –After seven years away from the recording world, Sherrié Austin has just completed work on her new release CIRCUS GIRL, a self written, self produced and self financed project that has placed her back up on the high wire of the entertainment industry.

After penning tunes for such country music heavy weights as George Strait, Tim McGraw and most recently a hilarious duet by CMA Male Artist of the Year Blake Shelton and Trace Adkins called “If I Was A Woman”, Austin decided to dust off the trapeze and get back on the other side of the microphone. The diminutive brunette has filled her new music project, CIRCUS GIRL, with stories of strength, humor, irony and more than a touch of sass for the post modern woman.

CIRCUS GIRL is available for pre-order!

Congratulations Sherrie Austin – 2011 Nashville Lifestyles 25 Most Beautiful People!

What makes someone a “beautiful person” is more than a great face, good hair, a healthy body—it’s someone who has all that, and then something inside that makes the physical just icing on the cake. What makes someone a “beautiful person” is more than a great face, good hair, a healthy body—it’s someone who has all that, and then something inside that makes the physical just icing on the cake.

With all that in mind, we’d like to introduce you to this year’s crop of Most Beautiful People. We think they’re pretty phenomenal.

Sherrie Austin:
41, Singer and Songwriter

Another gifted Australian import to Music City, Sherrie sees herself as a “realistic dreamer.” She’s also a generous soul, and is justifiably proud of donating some $25,00 from the sale of her single “Streets of Heaven” to St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Her favorite spot ever is Tahiti: “I cried real heartbreak tears the day I left to go home from my vacation, I think my heart may actually still be there on that little island somewhere, drinking coconut water with a splash of rum.”

The greatest influences in her life are her parents, and her music business inspirations include Dolly Parton and Taylor Swift. (She daydreams about learning the mandolin from her dad, by the way.) Spending time around town, you’ll find her shopping at the Mall at Green Hills, wandering at Radnor Lake or eating at the Palm. If she has the luxury of a day off, perhaps she’ll spend it drinking hot tea and reading in bed.

BMI and ASCAP teamed up yesterday afternoon (9/26) at CMA’s headquarters to honor the songwriting team behind Valory Music Co. artist Justin Moore’s No. 1 “If Heaven Wasn’t So Far Away.” Written by Dallas Davidson, Rob Hatch, and Brett Jones, the song was originally given to Moore’s producer Jeremy Stover over five years ago. As they finished recording Moore’s second album Outlaws Like Me, Stover recommended that “If Heaven Wasn’t So Far Away” be the first single and the rest is fairly recent history.

It’s hip to be Square: It took 15 years, but Thompson Square is finally making a good first impression. The husband-and-wife team of Keifer and Shawna Thompson has its first Top 10 country hit with the flirtatious country-rocker Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not, which has sold more than 500,000 downloads. The duo’s self-titled album entered Billboard at No. 15, selling 50,000 copies in its first two weeks. The Thompson Square story started in 1996, when the two singers moved to Nashville within days of each other and met their first week there.
A strong start: Keifer Thompson had a great first week in Nashville. The first day, he met Vern Gosdin, one of his favorite country singers. On day two, he won $50 in a singing competition. The day after that, he met the woman who would become his wife and singing partner. “I was like, ‘Man, this is easy!’ ” says the Miami, Okla., native, 37. “The reality check was pretty severe after that.”
Do the hustle: Shawna, 32, had a development deal with Warner Bros. Records when she left tiny Chatom, Ala., fresh out of high school. “My parents were very supportive,” she says. “They helped me load up the U-Haul, brought me to Nashville and dropped me off.” One lesson she learned from her parents came in handy the night she met Keifer at a Nashville nightclub and beat him in a game of pool: “I didn’t tell him that my dad owned a pool hall and game room when I was a kid.”
Animal magnetism: Keifer recalls the couple’s first kiss: “She was laying in my lap on a loveseat in my apartment. We were watching TV. We had that proverbial look into each other’s eyes. And she started doing the turtle neck — you know, started sticking her neck up, lips out, ready to rock.” Shawna remembers the moment much the same way, with one modification: “I had the giraffe neck. Giraffe neck’s better.”
Happy together: The couple married in 1999 and started performing together around the same time. They’ve also worked together offstage. “We bussed tables, hosted at the Nashville Palace,” Shawna says. “I did photography for a little while, and Keifer did graphic design, so we worked together doing that. We bartended together. It just goes on and on.” In fact, the two quit bartending jobs at Nashville’s The Wheel nightclub about a year ago.
I’m dreaming of a hit single: Keifer and Shawna wrote their first song together in the same place Irving Berlin wrote White Christmas: Beside the pool at the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix. “We were like, ‘We ought to write a song today, since we’re here.’ ” Shawna says. “It inspired us.” Not Far Enough was included on an independent album the two released several years ago but isn’t on the new album.
Perseverance pays off: The Thompsons finally got their record deal in 2010, 14 years after meeting. Thompson Square was produced by members of Jason Aldean’s band, who also play on the album. Many of the songs are true duets as the two singers direct their lyrics to each other, rather than simply harmonizing. The duo’s sound blends their influences: Shawna, whose voice draws comparisons to Pam Tillis’, grew up on a steady country diet; Keifer prefers acts such as Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, The Wallflowers and Merle Haggard. “It’s years and years and years of loving all kinds of music,” he says. “It’s just kind of what comes out of us at this point.”
